Book Club: Extreme Edition

This afternoon, a happy, little Amazon package arrived containing a new book I've decided to read.  Now, for those of you who don't remember my confession, I have a very difficult time completing books and journals (especially while doing graduate school reading, writing, and researching). I'm a social creature for cryin' out loud! However, I do greatly enjoy reading books while in a book club, discussion-type situation (talking is the BEST! *fist pump*).  So I'm a little late, but I joined the (in)courage book club to read and experience 7: An Experimental Mutiny Against Excess

I won't go into detail of my thoughts just yet, but look for the upcoming podcast where we will discuss some of our current thoughts and perspectives. Here is the book synopsis to give you an idea of what I'm getting into:

Jen Hatmaker was. Her friends were. And some might say that our culture is. Jen once considered herself unmotivated by the lure of prosperity, but upon being called "rich" by an undeniably poor child, evidence to the contrary mounted, and a social experiment turned spiritual journey was born. 7 is the true story of how Jen took seven months, identified seven areas of excess, and made seven simple choices to fight back against the modern-day diseases of greed, materialism, and overindulgence.

Food. Clothes. Spending. Media. Possessions. Waste. Stress. Jen and her family would spend thirty days on each topic, boiling it down to the number seven. Only eat seven foods, wear seven articles of clothing, and spend money in seven places. Eliminate the use of seven media types, give away seven things each day for a month, adopt seven green habits, and observe "seven sacred pauses."... 7's funny, raw, and not a guilt trip in the making, so come along and consider what Jesus' version of rich, blessed, and generous might look like in your life.

So that's that. I'm only about 20 pages in, and it's already hilarious and inspiring. Comment or tweet me if you want to join in! I am still trying to decide when and how I will join in on the experiment part.  And don't forget to check out the upcoming podcast... It might even be as hilarious and snippy as the Presidential debates were tonight!

Stay tuned...
