Run 4 Mercy 5K Coming Up in Nashville

Mercy Ministries is a free-of-charge Christian residential program that provides hope and life transformation for young women, ages 13-28, dealing with abuse and life-controlling issues. Support this ministry by joining the 5K run on October 20, 2012 at Maryland Farms in Brentwood.

G.L.A.M. girl Lauren Tyrrell Named Fairest of the Fair

One of our GLAM girls, Lauren Tyrrell, was crowned Fairest of the Fair at the Williamson County Fair on Aug. 5.

Lauren, 19, is a freshman at Columbia State. She is currently taking general education courses, but hopes to eventually major in education. She plans to transfer to Trevecca Nazarene University next year. She attended Independence High School (IHS), graduating in 2012.

17-year-old girl builds artificial ‘brain’ to detect breast cancer

“I taught the computer how to diagnose breast cancer,” Brittany Wenger, the Lakewood Ranch resident, told me today.

“And this is really important because currently the least invasive form of biopsy is actually the least conclusive, so a lot of doctors can’t use them.”

Wenger wanted to create a way for more doctors to use the minimally invasive procedure, called Fine Needle Aspirate, in order to ease the process of having lumps examined.

Breast cancer affects one in eight women worldwide, she noted, including members of her family.

Facing fears and doing good

Our friend Blair, from Wild and Precious, has started a new inspiring project to raise money for the African "Women at Risk" program while also facing one of her fears.  With The Pixie Project, Blair has set a goal to raise the funds necessary for rehabilitating three women in poverty and prostitution, and when the goal is reached, Blair will then face her insecurity and cut off all of her hair! Three teen girls petition for woman moderator 

[Photo by Aristide Economopoulos/The Star-Ledger | High School sophomores Emma Axelrod (left) Elena Tsemberis and Sammi Siegel ]These three sophomores aren’t yet old enough to vote, but they are still taking action. The trio started a petition, now online, asking the Commission on Presidential Debates to appoint a woman moderator to at least one of the three debates the commission has scheduled for October.
