You're My Brother, You're My Friend...
There are not many times that I write or blog about something that has no swing around back to the Bible. (Remember me? I'm the Bible College nerd!) However, today is a little different. Today, I want to introduce you to someone I have known my entire life; someone who has always been around. Someone who taught me how to draw on a wall, spit correctly, punch hard, take a fish off the hook, and check the oil in my car.
Someone who has picked on me since day one, dropped me when I was only one week old, drew on my head with a permanent marker, hit me with a “stick,” and has scared off any guy who has ever even looked at me the wrong way! But he is also someone who has loved me unconditionally and always has been there... my big brother, Matthew.
Matt and I are only twenty-one months apart and were best buds growing up. Over the years we have convinced MANY that we are twins, but I am here to tell you, we’re not! We’re just good friends! Even though 200 miles separate us now, when I go home, it’s like I have never been gone. Matt and I have a relationship like I have never experienced. We seem to always know what the other one is thinking, and if you get us started on something, we could go for hours! We feed off of each other’s sarcasm and witty jokes. If you start something with us, you will lose. We have been known to tackle the most difficult projects, make some killer tye-dyed cupcakes, beat the most competitive card players, and crack up the most uptight people. We have a gift! :)
So, why am I talking about my brother? Because, this time next week, I will be home helping him and the rest of my family prepare for his wedding where he will marry the love of his life. Yes, I am just as shocked as anyone that he found someone to claim him for the rest of his life! Brave soul. Anyway, it’s a little weird for me to think about my brother getting married. It’s weird to think that when I go home to visit that he won’t be in the next bedroom down from me at our parent’s house. It’s weird to think that at Christmas time there will be five of us instead of four. It’s weird to think that there probably won’t be many more midnight trips to Wal-Mart because we have nothing better to do. It’s just weird. However, as weird as it is, I could not be prouder or happier for my brother.
Over two and a half years ago, I noticed that he took a liking to a certain girl. I noticed that he would talk to her, do things for her and try to sit by her at different events. So one night, I did what every good sister should do… I told him to buck up and ask her out! I then continued to drive him crazy until he did so! A little over two years later he called me and asked me to come in town, because he wanted me to be there when he proposed. I do not think he could find a better woman. She is an incredible person who loves God and loves him. They make one awesome couple… all thanks to me, of course! I cannot wait to see what God has in store for the two of them in the years to come. My prayer is that God would use them in a mighty way, and with each day that passed, they will fall more and more in love.
My challenge to you… Take a moment out of your time to see, call, text, write, email, facebook, or whatever it is you do, your brother or sister. They truly are a gift from God. You never know what you might learn from them. It could be life changing!
A brother is someone
with fun-loving ways
with wit and good humor
to spare.
He does thoughtful things
without any fuss
and when you're in trouble
he's there.
A brother is more
than just part of the family..
he's also a friend
through and through.
And that's a description
that certainly fits
a wonderful brother like you......
